You can buy a ticket to the Met/Yankees series...as long as you buy tickets to four other games.

I took a look at the process. After selecting two tickets for tomorrow's game, then a Dodgers, Phillies, Braves and D-backs game, I got my suggested price. $900.

BTW, they are only selling seats in the more expensive areas (Metro box, Baseline box, etc.), not Promenade box or other less expensive locales.

As Ron Hunt said, "
The Flushing Flash
The soldout Subway series is now available because they haven't sold enough
season tickets or six packs and are now offering deals."

BTW, for the first subway series game at Citi Field, there are currently 3,141 tickets available on StubHub. Presumably the Mets are holding at least an equal number of tickets. So who actually has tickets to this game, beyond season ticket holders?

On another note, Ron Hunt reports this parking update:

The Flushing Flash
A flyer was handed out at the Southfield parking lot this morning, dated 6/9/09.
Now for weekday day games the $4 rate is in effect until 9AM, then full rate
$18. For weekday night games the $4 rate is in effect until 12noon, then full
rate. And for weekday games vs. the Yanks and during the US Open the commuter
lot is closed until 4 hour prior to gametime and then it's the full rate.

It can be yours for only $250. Amazingly no one has bid on either this or the Women's Bathroom sign. Man if only I had been born rich. Every bathroom in my house would have a lit sign. On second thought, I wouldn't need the Women's sign because my wife would have left me after spending money on bathroom signs.

A third show may be added for July 21.

Paul played a part in the last concerts at Shea Stadium, when Billy Joel was the headliner. Of course, before his successful solo career, McCartney played in a small little rock and roll band that played the first concert ever at Shea, which was the first time ANY rock band played a stadium show.

Folks can debate Shea Stadium's aesthetic limitations and its contributions to baseball lore, but there is no questioning the Mets former home's contribution to rock and roll history. It was the only arena on earth to host The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Grand Funk Railroad, The Police, REM, The Clash and The Rutles. Not impressed yet? Peruse the Shea Rocks section of Loge13 and you will change your mind,

Paul would be the best choice to play the first gig, no doubt. Expect an official announcement in two weeks.

A weird night overall, from Murphy's Subway home run to Fernando making his first rookie mistake (run, Fernando, run!) to Johan doing an Ollie imitation.

Plus Citi Field was a massive distraction last night, thanks to the new exclusivity rules in the bars and my first fight with a drunk at a Met game in a few decades. More on that later.

First the game: despite no Reyes, Church, Delgado and the rest of the injured parade, the Mets put up a good fight. Johan was erratic, striking out 10 but walking 6 along the way. With a 3-0 lead in the 4th, Johan came a bit undone, giving up a massive 2-run homer to Adam Dunn that almost hit the old Apple beyond the bridge. Later in the inning, Santana walked in the tying run. Ugh.

But the Mets did not let themselves get beat by a lesser team. Murphy redeemed himself for a missed catch at 1st in the first by crunching a 2-run homer in the 5th. At least it was a home run eventually. The ball hit the Subway sign on the Pepsi Porch, now known as Wilpon's Folly, as our owners' desire to create a quirky homage to dead old stadiums not named Shea resulted in this ground rules trivia question. The umps had to leave the field and review the tape. Meanwhile, 40,000 of us in our seats were not allowed to watch an instant reply on the two giant Citi Field screens. Eventually, the HR was acknowledged and the Mets kept the lead for good.

It should be noted that just below Wilpon's Folly, young Fernando Martinez made a great catch early in the game, crashing into the bullpen at one of its nooks (or is that a cranny?). A great catch all but forgotten when, during his next at-bat, Martinez watched as his meager pop-up in front of home plate fell out of the catcher's glove. By the time Fernando ran, it was too late - he was out at first and in the dog house of impatient Met fans. Welcome to the big leagues. It can only get better from here kid, unless you cut a rap record with Lastings Milledge.

But I'd say Citi Field had a worse night. The stadium itself is fine and I'm getting to like the sight lines. But last night's experience was the opposite of my Citi Field trip a few weeks back. Last game, O entered the Promenade Box bar and enjoyed the view while dining and drinking - very civilized. Last night, when my Dad and I tried to enter, we were stopped by two ushers who demanded our tickets, then informed us we didn't have access. But I was here last game, I reasoned. "We've changed our policy," I was told. So the Mets have gone back to excluding fans from even the most modest of bars. Never mind that the food and restaurants are touted as a selling point for the stadium. Never mind that the Promenade Box Bar was EMPTY. Never mind that I had cash in hand and was not afraid to spend. We walked out and pocketed the dough I would have gladly coughed up to the Mets. Foolish.

But this policy is nothing compared to the Ambulatory Rules of Citi Field. As previously mentioned, our seats are in the last row of our section, on the same level as the Promenade walkway. Folks are allowed to stand directly behind us. Most of the time, that's fine but occasionally people will stand there jabbering about anything but the game. Or a drunken lout or two will scream nonsense gibberish in the general direction of the field, their slobbering syllables passing first through my aching head.

Last night we asked the green jacketed director matron of our section to clear the area when folks were lingering too long. She said she can't - it's stadium policy to let people stand there. That policy was in full effect, when around the third inning, two drunk guys stood behind us to the side, talking on their cell phones and to two tourist ladies. They weren't directly annoying; most of the time they weren't even watching the game and were easily ignored. But when the ladies left, the guys finally noticed the game and began to randomly blurt out cheers. By the 6th inning, they were directly behind me. Finally, after one particularly loud random "Lets Go Mets," I politely asked the louder dude to move 10 feet in either direction. To which he replied, "I said lets go Mets, what the F#*& is your problem." This argument usually wins with me, at least it did 20 years ago. But not last night. Words were exchanged; Ron Hunt asked the dude where his seats were. he told us way up behind us.

And that's the galling part. Folks can buy inferior tickets, then move around the stadium as part of the "experience." Instead, they move to right behind us and set up beer camp and our "experience" is obliterated. A few minutes after our spirited debate subsided, I got up and talked with the drunk dude, explaining that when he cursed, he blew it. I don't care what you're chanting but don't curse me out in my seat. He apologized, we shook hands and he moved on. He was actually not a bad guy at all. The real problem here is the policy...and the "directors" whose job it is apparently is to stand around telling us about the policy. Our green jacket witnessed the whole affair and did nothing to intervene. Unacceptable.

Fred or Jeff, feel free to come sit with us one night and see if our experience matches what it used to be like in Ebbets Field.

Anyways, the Mets are in first with a day off to mend.

For a day game now, like tomorrow, no commuter parking unless you're in the lot by 3AM! Full load after that, $18.

- Had a good look at the Shea parking lot from the elevated #7. There is no home plate, bases or diamond yet. They are still working on removing the rubble and just starting on the asphalt behind that blue fence.

I have not yet driven to a game (mass transit for me). Even though I have been warned, I will still punch my steering wheel the first time I am charged 18 clams to park for a game. Pelfrey is now 4-0. Wright, Beltran and Reyes homered. We swept the Phillies. We're in second place.

Dare I say it, I had a fine time at the old (new) ballpark last night. There, I dared say it.

I went out early to my second game at Citi Field, in my ongoing quest to figure out Citi Field. After entering the rotunda, I made a first visit
to the Mets mega store. There signing autographs was an old familiar
face: Rusty Staub.

After
perusing the store, I made my way up to the Promenade area, heading towards the Promendade cafe behind home plate. On opening day, one
required a special ticket to get in this exclusive bar. Not so anymore,
apparently. I was able to enter, order a beer and watch batting
practice from a great view. I had the best, coldest Brooklyn lager beer ever while eating my smuggled sandwich. The sun began breaking through the clouds and had a bonding moment with Shea Field. I then randomly ran into Ron Hunt, confirming my suspicions that this was the right watering hole.

As for the game, the Mets didn't make us suffer too much. Beltran and Wright both hit two run homers in bottom of the first off a wobbly Jamie Moyer. We built up a 7-1 lead, which the Phillies slowly chipped away at, aided by some lousy calls by the 1st base umpire.
In the top of the 8th, the first base
ump made a terrible interference call against reyes during a rundown play. Jerry Manuel got himself ejected, which was the right thing to do. Then Pedro Felliciano gave up an Ibanez 2-run
homer, which was the wrong thing to do. The score was then 7-5, but K-Rod was able to record his 9th save.

The seats were still about 30 percent empty during the game, but the passageways were packed. I think many folks are still treating Shea Field more asa tourist attraction than a ballpark, which is to be expected. But the crowd was more familiar and knowledgeable this time out and the Mets played better, which always helps.

Lets see if Jon Niese can make it five in a row tonight.

But it's also bad for the business, not just the short-term, revenue generating side of things but team valuation. The Deal explains the latest news:

The New York Mets at times have been taking a beating on the field
in this young baseball season, underperforming with their soft hitting
and lackluster pitching. But off the field, the baseball franchise
hasn't been faring well either, making a handful of errors that would
leave any Mets fan cringing. The latest off-field snafu involves an
announcement from rating agency Moody's Investors Service of a possible
downgrade to junk of municipal bonds sold in 2006 to finance the Mets'
new stadium Citi Field.

Moody's placed about $613 million of Queens Baseball Stadium LLC
tax-exempt and taxable bonds (rated Baa3) sold through New York City's
Industrial Development Agency under review for a possible ratings cut.
The agency is concerned because the insurer backing the bonds -- Ambac
Assurance Corp. -- was downgraded last month to Ba3, the third-highest
junk grade.

But all that money spent on the stadium has forced the club to recoup
costs partly through higher ticket prices, especially in prime seats.
With the economy in a downswing, the result is many seats intended for
corporate big wigs remain empty, prompting Major League Baseball
commissioner Bud Selig to speak last month to Mets and Yankees
officials to possibly lower ticket prices. So far, the Mets are not
budging, continuing to charge $175 to $495 for 1,567 seats in the Delta
Club, which includes 20 rows between the dugouts.

This follows the brouhaha several months ago of a public backlash led
by politicians denouncing the club for continuing its $400 million,
20-year naming rights deal with Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C), after the bank
had received a total of $45 billion in U.S. government bailout money.
Citigroup and the Mets contend their contract will be maintained
because the deal was signed before the bailouts.

But that's not all: Business journalists were just as busy as sports
reporters when Mets co-owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz reportedly
admitted they lost $500 million to Wall Street fraudster Bernie Madoff,
triggering speculations that a stake in the team would have to be sold.
Jeff Wilpon, the son of Fred, responded that the loss would not
necessitate a divestment of the team by the Wilpon family.

Now the team's financial success seems to be centered around its new
stadium, and that component of the equation is not adding up. Losing
doesn't help. After all, who wants to watch a faltering team play, even
if it is in a new stadium. ... It's simply not worth it, especially at
the level of current ticket prices. And that's what Mets' management
fears.

Work has kept me pretty busy the past week but that's not the main reason I haven't posted much lately. Like all Met fans, I am finding this team hard to watch. And like all Met fans, I'm still a sucker and bought more Shea Field tickets during today's pre-sale ticket sale silliness. I'll be bringing my kids to their first official game on June 25th, and sitting in the Pepsi Porch.

Meanwhile, the Mets are 9-12 and heading into Philly for the weekend. It'd be silly to say this is a must-win series but the Mets really need to get their backs up or risk massive NL East humiliation.

Fortunately they drew Chan Ho Park as the opposing pitcher tonight. It was just two years ago - April 30th, 2007 - when we watched from old Loge13 as Park make his first pitch as a Met:

One pitch. One out. It was all downhill from there. Three days later, Park was designated for reassignment.

And who was he replaced by? Lino Undaneta, who had a major league ERA of: INFINITY. (If you knew that answer, I am impressed. And troubled.).

So go Pelfrey. And Lets Go Mets tonight!

The New York Yankees had to take extreme measures to put bottoms in their premium seats. Last night, the Yankees announced they would cut prices for the top-tier $2,500 seats in half, a stunning development. Could the Mets be next?

At least one baseball fan was not pleased. How does Keith Olbermann go to games if he's doing a live TV show five nights a week? Anyway, here's the AP story, with pricing details:

Empty Seats Make Yankees Cut Some Premium Prices
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK (AP) -- Turns out a few more fans might be able to buy those empty front-row seats at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees slashed prices on more than 40 percent of their front-row seats by up to 50 percent Tuesday and announced many of those who bought tickets closest to the field for $325-$2,500 will be eligible for additional free seats.

Those initiatives could help pack previously unfilled areas that were an eye sore on television broadcasts during the opening homestand at the $1.5 billion ballpark.

''There are a few hundred suite seats in our premium locations that have not been sold on a full season basis,'' Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement. ''As a result, and for many of our fans who have already purchased full season suite seats in such premium locations, the Yankees are announcing today a program that adjusts certain prices and benefits.''

While most of the cheaper tickets in the second and third decks were sold for the opening six games, entire sections of cushioned blue seats with teak arm rests in the first nine rows in 25 sections went empty, areas that cost $500 and up. In addition, many of the non-premium seats between the bases, which cost $325 as part of season tickets and $375 individually, also went unfilled.

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, who owns three $850 Legends Suite season tickets, was unhappy prices were cut only for those with front-row seats while others will be given additional tickets.

''If they're offering only selective refunds, depend upon it: There are going to be lawsuits,'' he said. ''Great, more tickets nobody wants. The silver lining here is that even more charities are going to be getting even more tickets from me.''

The price of first-row season seats in nine sections of the Delta Sky360 Suite one deck up behind home plate was cut from $750 to $550.

Among the top non-premium seats in the lower deck, the Yankees announced a buy-three-get-one-free program for new $325-a-seat season tickets in the 15 sections between the bases.

Steinbrenner said the Yankees had sold 85 percent of their premium seats and 37,000 full-season equivalents, more than 3.4 million tickets in all. But it was apparent most of the unsold seats were closest to the field.

In response, the team cut the price of first-row Legends Suite seats in four sections on the outer half of the dugouts and photo cages from $2,500 to $1,250. According to a count by The Associated Press, 48 seats were affected.

In addition, seats in the first row in the final three sections down each foul line were slashed from $1,000 to $650. That affects 68 seats.

In all, the AP count had the Yankees cutting the price of 116 of 258 front-rows seats, which have been on sale for up to $2,625 for individual games. The team said the reductions will apply to this season only, and ticket buyers can receive either a refund or credit.

Assemblyman Richard Brodsky of Westchester, a frequent and vocal critic of the Yankees, said the reductions weren't enough.

''It's the public that built Yankee Stadium, and even at these prices, the public has been excluded from the very stadium they built,'' Brodsky said. ''It's a continuing disaster.''

Those who bought $2,500 first-row season tickets in the 11 sections surrounding the plate that weren't reduced -- there are 98 seats in that area -- will receive an equal number of free first-row tickets for the rest of the season. Those who bought $1,250 first-row seats in the first two sections past each photo cage -- 44 seats previously in that category -- will receive free seats for 24 games.

Fans who bought $850 Legends Suite season tickets -- there are 843 seats located in that category -- will get free seats in the same section for eight games and free seats in the $500 section for four games.

Those who bought $600 Legends Suite season tickets -- 324 seats are in that area -- will get free seats in the $500 section for 10 games. Those who bought $500 Legends Suite seats -- there are 470 -- will get free seats in that section for eight games.

Among the $325 non-premium seats between the bases, the Yankees said fans who bought two or three season tickets will receive two free tickets for every other game starting with Thursday or Friday. Those who bought four or five season tickets will get two free seats for every game, those who bought six or seven will get three free seats for every game and those who bought season tickets will get four free seats for every game.

The Yankees have charged far higher prices than the Mets, whose top 92 seats behind home plate, called Delta Club Platinum, average $495 under the team's five-tier variable pricing system at $800 million Citi Field.
