Terry Collins will officially be named a successor of Salty Parker Tuesday.
Collins beat out Wally Backman, Chip Hale and Bob Melvin for the job.
Hale will remain third base coach and Backman and Melvin will also get jobs in the Mets organization. That leaves us with five general managers and all the manager candidate finalists landing jobs with the Mets. Note to self: get an interview with the Mets - they can't turn anyone away!
Although it was also announced that Dan Warthen is returning as pitching coach, the NY Times mentioned that Collins is best friends with Dave Wallace and would like him to be pitching coach one day. There's also word that Mookie may return as first base coach.
So what does everyone think? Given that Collins job last year was to train and nurture the Mets minor league talent, did he do such a great job as to deserve this gig? Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada, Josh Thole...just some of the guys Collins mentored. Now they may all get a chance to play for Terry in the big leagues.
Well, I'm a big dopey Met fan and I'm going to be optimistic about Terry. I think you got to be. Hope springs eternal, and I haven't gotten my invoice yet.
I hope Collins brings much needed discipline to a clubhouse shockingly devoid of it the last few years. That's a step that everyone should approve of.
I hope HoJo is gone, he never seemed particularly cerebral, which most hitting coaches are nowadays. And he was too close to David Wright. Let's get somebody outside the organization.
I'm also glad Warthen is back, I think he has done a credible job the last few years. With less than ideal talent.
It will also nice to see Mookie back as the first base coach, welcome back #1! We knew you would have beaten old man Buckner to the bag!
ESPN waited until Miller and Morgan's contracts were up to make the change; soon enough, it will announce that Dan Shulman and Bobby Valentine will join Hershiser for 2011 and beyond
In case you missed it, ESPN announced the other day that Miller and Morgan are done on Sunday Night baseball, after 21 years. Now Bobby will reunite in the broadcast booth with his veteran pitcher from 1999. I may have to tune into those broadcasts, although I'm sure I will be quickly tuning out after a few innings.
So does anyone think Terry Collins WON'T be the Mets manager next year?
The Mets sent out their 2011 Kids Club pitch. We enjoyed the club back in Shea Stadium, especially as it included two tickets and a chance to walk on the field.
So what does the plan get you this year? "A voucher for two tickets*"
There's that darned asterik again. If you scroll down the page, you will discover the "voucher" gets you: "Two tickets for the 2011 regular season only, Monday - Thursday home
games. Some blackout dates may apply."
So no weekend games. Just weeknights, when kids usually have camp trips and other obligations.
I did a quick scan. There are nine day games that fall on a Monday - Thursday: One in April, July and August; two in May, June and September. I bet those will be blocked out.
