— Days Without Shea —

by Kingman on July 7 at 8:35AM
Tuesday night, the Loge13 crew witnessed another complete game shutout from our seats. This time, Johan threw a 110 pitch masterpiece beating the Reds 3-0 on a steamy Citi Field night.

The last complete game we saw was notable for one hit - the only one Jon Niese gave up in the doubleheader night cap. Tuesday's game also had one memorable hit...Johan's solo homer, his first in the majors and the first hit and run of the game.

This was the kind of game Grandpa Kingman (Kingman Senior Senior) would have liked. As a kid, I used to meet my grandfather at Shea for day games (Remember Senior Citizens Day?). He used to relish pitcher's duels, which made no sense to me. I preferred games where Maz and Kingman (of course) launched blasts into the parking lot.  But in my advanced age, I now appreciate games like Tuesday, where the two starters go deep into the game on a humid summer night.

The best moment: top of the ninth, two on and one out. Jason Bay just dropped an easy out in left field. Jerry Manuel comes out of the dugout and the stadium unloads a chorus of boo's. He spends about 15 seconds on the mound, then leaves. Next pitch, Ike Davis flags down a line drive to first base. Next pitch, a fly out to Angel Pagan. Game over. Nice non-move by Jerry, whose stock keeps rising in Loge13.

Ron Hunt dined in the Accela club last night before the game and will send some video/pictures soon.
