Mike Piazza was honored at the 24th annual great sports legend dinner to benefit the Buoniconti Fund.
Piazza was asked by
New York magazine if he missed Shea Stadium.
Mike's reply:
Well, Shea is
kind of like that good friend who you always have fun with but he never
buys lunch. You know, you can kind of do without him. You like him, but
at the end of the day, do you really miss him? I don't know."Hmm that's kinda of a head-scratcher. Did Shea neglect to buy Mike lunch all those years? Has Mike tried the food at Citi Field?
With all the cash Mike stockpiled from his Shea days, I would hope he is usually the guy picking up the tab.

When I see old photos of Shea, I am not sure how I feel. Then, I saw a bunch of photos of the first car I owned. It was a 1978 Buick LeSabre. It was powder blue, with a plaid interior, and I took possession of it in the fall of 1988, so it was NOT in style, let me tell you. It showed its age. It was dependable. At the end (1993), it just wasn't worth putting any more money into it.
It was my first. I had great time / memories driving that car. Road trips, snow storms, flat tires, you name it. I get nostalgic for that car sometimes. I was sad to see it go, because it had many memories. I still look at those pictures.
Then I ask myself, "What would I feel if I bought another 1978 Buick LeSabre? (today)" I am most certain that all the fond memories that I had would be surplanted by:
1. What? I need to fill the tank up again?
2. Damn this busted AC.
3. Great, the vinyl roof is peeling off.
4. The paint is flaking off the hood.
5. The seats need reupholstering. I am sitting in a hole g-ddammit.
6. The headliner is falling down - pass me the stapler "Swingline, LIC Models only please -- EZ Loading"
6. Why did I throw out my 8-track tapes?
Maybe Mike didn't spend enough time with Shea as the rest of us... but I can see where he's coming from.
I prefer to look at my pictures, and only think of the good times. That's my lunch.
Cheers!
