Pelfrey0731Break up the Mets!

Spring Training games have begun today. The Mets are playing the Tigers. Here is the starting lineup, courtesy of MetsBlog.com:

OF Angel Pagan
OF Brady Clark
DH Marlon Anderson
OF Ryan Church
C Ramon Castro
2B Ruben Gotay
1B Michel Abreu
3B Anderson Machado
SS Anderson Hernandez
Mike Pelfrey

Pelfrey is already done. Newsday’s david Lennons wrote: “Close the book on Mike Pelfrey, who endured a 2 1/2-hour bus ride for roughly 20 minutes of work. Pelfrey pitched two scoreless innings, allowing an infield single to Magglio Ordonez and striking out one.”

Pelfrey is looking to have a strong spring. ATM there is no room for him in the starting rotation but if he pitches up to his potential 9as Mike started to do last September), the Mets may have some tough choices.

What is your outlook for Pelfrey and Maine this year?

I think Maine will have another good year. He lost steam at the end of 2007 but now has a couple full seasons behind him and should have the arm strength to go deeper. No doubt Pelfrey will be in the rotation at some point this year. I like Hernandez but he would be a better fit in the bullpen and less prone to long DL stints if he relinquished his starter's post.
