Need a sign that the Mets are different this Spring? Check out Beltran trash talking Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies.
Carlos declared the Mets the team to beat earlier in the week and is not standing down after Rollins called him out.
"I know probably when we go to Philly I'm going to hear a lot of things," Beltran said with a smile yesterday. "But that's all right, I'm not worried about that.
"This is good for baseball. A lot of people are focusing on the steroids thing. We're putting the focus back on the game."
"I'm not saying anything I don't feel," he said. "We have a lot to prove this year after what we went through. The Phillies beat us at the end last year, and it still seems unbelievable what happened to us, but this year is going to be different.
"This year we are better in a lot of ways. This has to be the year for us."
It’s not exactly a Clemens/Piazza-esque rivalry. According to the Daily News, Rollins and Beltran are “friendly,” if not exactly friends.
But it’s good to hear a Met player -especially one of the more stoic specimens – step up and flex some verbal muscle. This is what the boys needed last September instead of shoulder-shrugging “we’ll get ‘em tomorrow” rhetoric. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, there was some overheard chatter in Philly camp about expecting “a brawl” this season. Note to Loge13 residents: 2008 Philly games may be a good time to dismantle our seats and swipe them as souvenirs.
