Has there been a stranger Met road trip?
After getting swept four games by the Phillies in humiliating style, the Mets headed to Atlanta. The odds were not in their favor: The Mets were 4–8 against the Braves before this weekend and have stunk historically in Turner Field.
Three days later, the Mets have swept the Braves, are four games ahead of the 2nd place Phillies and are starting Pedro Martinez today in Cincinnati. This has been a good weekend so far.
But there is another pitcher in the game today and he’s pretty good. Aaron Harang is 14–3 with a 3.51 ERA. In two career starts vs. the Mets, Harang is 2–0 with a 4.4 ERA.
But as a team, the Reds are reeling. The Mets took three of four from them after the All-Star break. Before the weekend, they were 6.5 back and Reds fans thought they saw their team poised to make a run. Then the Cards swept them. ATM they are in 4th place in the NL Central, 8 games behind the Cubs.
Reds manager Pete Mackanin called a team meeting Sunday after losing to the Cardinals. “I challenged the players to do the same thing (as the Cards),” Mackanin said. “Look for ways to win games in the month of September.” Please start Thursday.
Good luck Pedro.
