This was supposed to be a quiet September. With a superior rotation & bullpen and a surging offense, The Mets could cake-walk through the month and prepare for October. Maybe along the way, Met fans could tweak the Spankees as they limped behind the Red Sox.
Now after ANOTHER Phillies sweep, we’re battling with the Nationals while the Phillies keep on winning. Just 2.5 games between us and the team that won’t die.
Most Met fans seem more angry than worried. Angry that this team didn’t walk away with the division, given ample opportunities to do so. Angry that our bullpen can’t live up to its reputation. Angry that the Met players and manager don’t seem all that angry about what’s happening to them now.
At least LoDuca got mad last night, but only because he got taken out of the game for defensive purposes.
This can all turn around tonight. John Maine pitched great last week against the Braves. He threw a shutout in Washington earlier this year. In 6 lifetime starts vs. the Nats, Maine is 3–1 with a 3.74 ERA. Meanwhile the Nationals are sending out Joel Hanrahan, who is 4–3 with 5.83 ERA.
The Phillies are in St. Louis and have Cole Hamels back. He’ll need to pitch alot of innings to help his team, which blew through their bullpen in last night’s 13–11 win. Todd Wellemeyer goes for the Cards.
