The good news is the Mets beat the Reds yesterday, scoring five whole runs in the process.
The bad news is the Mets now head to the west coast for seven games against tough opponents, while the Braves get to play the Reds in Atlanta.
The Braves are keeping pace, and are just 1.5 games back. They’ve won 4 in a row and get to tee off on a weak Cincinnati team for three days, before hosting the Cardinals.
We’ll be playing four games with LA, who have the best record in the NL, after three games against the Padres. The Mets will need to go 4–3 on this trip to have a chance of remaining in first.
Here are the pitching matchups in San Diego:
MONDAY – Jorge Sosa vs David Well. Sosa (7–3, 3.92 ERA) is the difference between us being a first place team and a third place team right now. He’s making his first start since coming off the DL. Wells is making his first start since flipping out and getting ejected in a Braves game last week. Lets hope the extra rest has helped Sosa and hurt Wells.
TUESDAY – El Duque vs. Jake Peavy. In three career starts vs. the Padres, Hernandez is 2–0 with a 2.40 ERA and 15 strikeouts. Peavy, meanwhile, is 3–1 lifetime vs. Mets in 7 appearance, with a 3.20 ERA.
WEDNESDAY – John Maine vs. Greg Maddux. Maine had his worst start in a long time Friday night against the Reds. He needs to shake that off. Maddux has now lost three in a row, with an 8.80 ERA during that stretch. He needs to not shake that off.
