— Days Without Shea —

Since the Mets are playing the Padres, I thought I’d post these photos.

During a few games in 2005, I came early to Shea with the kids to get autographs. The one guy who was out there signing every time was Heath Bell. Not only did he sign everything thrust in front of him, but he was very chatty, very cool with all the fans.

The Mets traded Bell and Royce Ring last November for Ben Johnson and another pitcher Jon Adkins. Both guys are down in the minors. Adkins is 1–3 with a 3.52 ERA for the Zephyrs. Johnson is hitting .281 and squandered his few chances in the big leagues this season.

As for Bell? He’s pitched in 45 games this season for the Padres, and has a 3–2 record with a 2.22 ERA while eating up late innings before Hoffman comes in. We could’ve really used him this year.

So here’s to Heath Bell. He’s a great guy and we wish him well. Until October.
