Yesterday we said Orlando Hernandez would have to repeat last Thursday’s pitching performance – or even improve it – if the Mets were to have a chance Wednesday against Peavy and the Padres.
El Duque did it, pitching seven innings of 2 hit ball and even stealing yet another base in the 7–0 win in San Diego.
Hernandez is the first Met pitcher to steal bases in consecutive games since Seaver did it in May 1967. And Seaver was only 1/3 of El Duque’s age when he did it.
The Carloses also came to play last night. Both Beltran and Delgado went 2–4 and drove in 3 of the Mets’ 7 runs.
The Braves, meanwhile, lost their second straight game to the reds and are now 2.5 games behind in the NL East.
Tonight it’s Maine vs. Maddux, then on to LA.
