John MaineIn case you missed it, John Maine was named NL pitcher of the month for April.

Jose Reyes was named player of the month.

As Mets.com said, Reyes and Maine are the first Mets teammates to win the Player and Pitcher of the Month awards in the same month since Dwight Gooden and Gary Carter in September 1985.

When Gooden won the award, he went 4–0 over 6 games, with a 0.34 ERA and 49 strikeouts. Dwight just seemed to get better every start that season.

John Maine has had won of the best starts in team history, going 4–0 over five starts, and compiling a 1.35 ERA.

He has struck out 30 over 33 innings.

Reyes hit .356 in April and stole 17 bases. At this pace, Reyes could steal over 100 bases in 2007. Only 4 guys have done it in history. ESPN muses on the possibility here.

To earn the player of the month honors in September 1985, Gary Carter hit 13 home runs and drove in 36 RBI’s, while hitting .320. BTW Carter didn’t steal any bases that month.
