Forty years ago today, Tom Seaver made his Met debut…and changed the team forever.
Seaver got a no-decision as the Mets beat the Pirates 3–2. The player now known as “The Franchise” pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 6 hits and 2 runs. He walked 4 and struck out 8. He also hit Pirates CF Matty Alou twice. Alou had led off the game with a double so Tom was probably exacting revenge.
(Matty is also the uncle of Moises Alou (who had a pretty good night Thursday) and Mel Rojas, whose Met career is not quite as renowned as Seaver’s.)
