Julio Franco came off the bench in the 7th Friday and had his first pinch hit RBI of 2007 as the Mets braved the cold and beat the Nationals 3 – 2.
The Nationals may well be the worst team in the National League. But in this weather (38 degrees at game time, with a 26 MPH wind blowing in from Jamaica Bay), it’s anybody’s game. Delgado and Beltran both launched a few shots that in a normal April, would have been easy HR’s. Instead, the wind blew them back in for outs.
Pelfrey pitched decently in his first start of 2007. Forty years to the day that Tom Seaver made his Met debut, Pelfrey held his own, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs in 5.2 innings.
Loge13 always worries when Julio Franco comes to the plate. A man his age should be home in bed at this time of night, watching Matlock and drinking Ovaltine. Yet there Franco was in the bottom of the 7th Friday, with 2 outs and Wright on second base, driving in what turned out to be the game winning RBI. The last few nights have been games for the aged at Shea. The streak continues tomorrow when El Duque Hernandez (age 39 – 53) takes the mound.
