METS_ROGER_CRAIG_small.jpgSunday night, the Mets will open their season - and the 2007 MLB season - against the Cardinals.

Over the years, the Mets have innaugurated their season against the Cards six times, and enjoy a 4-2 record (lets not talk about their 11-20-1 2007 spring training record).

The most significant of those opening day games was in 1962, when the Mets played their first game ever against the Cardinals, in St. Louis. The Cards crushed the Mets 11-4. Portentously, The Mets gave up their first run ever on a Roger Craig balk. Listen to the play-by-play. Lindsey Nelson can barely stifle his disdain as he calls the action on that historic day.

Lets hope tomorrow night goes better. At least we don't have Carl Pavano taking the mound.

Touche! Maybe the Mets should consider that route with Beltran when the games really start to count, choke artist.

A Rod. 29 post season AB in 2005/2006. 0 HR. 0 RBI. .102 AVG.

Beltran. 36 post season AB in 2006. 3 HR. 5 RBI. .278 AVG.

I mercifully excluded 2004, when Beltran had one of the best post seasons in history.

Choke artist?

1 at bat, game 7, 2 outs, all the marbles...backwards K.

And I never said A-Rod wasn't a choke artist. Although, he does usually get the bat off his shoulder.

Hi, saw this blog for the first time today (4/17) as the result of a link from Faith & Fear. Chronicling Shea's history is a great idea: I've always thought that a biography of Shea Stadium would make a fascinating and funny book.

Now I have some sobering news: After growing up listening to that "Miracle Mets" record, as I'm sure you did, I was disappointed to discover much later in life that Lindsay's call of the balk linked above was not actual archived audio but a studio-created re-enactment in which they got the facts wrong.

Craig balked in the first inning, but the balk only advanced runners from 1st and 2nd to 2nd and 3rd. And that was after the Mets had given up "their first run in history" -- on a Stan Musial single.

Anyway, I'm interested in your topic. I run the "Mets by the Numbers" site (mbtn.net and/or metsbythenumbers.com) which is currently under heavy renovation but I will get a link up when the new site is fully functional.

the audio clip from the mets 1st game was a recreation and fiction to boot!
according to retrosheet the 1st run scored against the mets 4/11/62 was by Julian Javier, driven in by stan musial. craig balked while pitching to the next hitter - ken boyer.
as casey said "...you can look it up!"
